1950s Makeup step-by-step tutorial

1950s Makeup step-by-step tutorial
How To :

  1. Matte skin was a must in the ’50s. Start by applying a matte foundation (I use Korres Wild Rose Foundation). Use a powder if you prefer. Next, apply under-eye concealer.
  2. Define your eyebrows. Fill them in with a pencil, focusing on the arch. If you’re blonde, the pencil should be a few shades darker then your hair. If you’re a brunette, it should be a few shades lighter.
  3. Using liquid liner, create a winged eye that points out toward the end of your eyebrow. If you need more help, check out my tutorial here.
  4. Sweep a light brown shadow over your eyelids, then apply a darker brown shadow to the creases and outer lower lash lines. Blend until it looks seamless.
  5. Apply lots of black mascara.
  6. Place a few individual fake lashes on the outer corners of your eyes using tweezers. This highlights the winged eye and makes for a more glamorous look.
  7. Line your lips with a nude or red pencil. Next, apply your favorite red lipstick.
  8. Apply a rosy-hued blush to the apples of your cheeks.

How To Do The Stippling Gradient Nails

How To Do The Stippling Gradient Nails

How to :

  1. First you need to paint your nails with which ever color you like.
  2. Then, using a tiny dotting tool (or a needle, possibly a toothpick, or a #18/0 spotter brush) make a bunch of dots near the tip of your nail, so many that barely any of the base color shows through. You can use nail polish for this, but I chose to use acrylic paint.
  3. After that keep working in sections, using less and less dots and making the sections ever so slightly bigger until you reach your cuticle. If you have long nails you could probably stop before the cuticle, or you could just make the sections bigger. I like to do four sections, but you could do more or less depending on how gradual you want the gradient.

How to :

  1. Start by making two pigtails, using rubber bands. Make them a bit higher up on your head.
  2. Braid both pigtails...
  3. ...and secure ends with a rubber band.
  4. Remove the top rubber bands from the pigtails.
  5. Cross one braid over the other.
  6. Starting with the braid that's now on top, create a sort of "C" shape and pin. It doesn't have to be precise; you just want to have a nice curved shape from the braid.
  7. Make the same curved shape with the other braid and pin. Curve it up and over the top of the braid you just pinned down.
  8. Ultimately, you want to get a nice sort of pretzel or knot shape from the two braids. Tuck the ends of both braids behind the knot and pin them down securely.

How To Get The Perfect Blowout at Home

How To Style :

  • Step 1 : Using a round brush, dry your hair and make sure it’s completely dry.
  • Step 2 : Twist your hand in a spiral motion when releasing hair from the round brush. You’ll end up with a pretty, spiral wave. Continue until your hair is completely dry.
  • Step 3 : Using either a 1-inch curling iron or wand, wrap 1-2 inch sections of your hair around the iron. Don’t do a spiral wrap; hold the iron so it is perpendicular to your head. This will create a relaxed waved that doesn’t start right at the root.
  • Step 4 : Lift a few sections at the crown of your head and tease for some volume. Do this in layers so you don’t end up with a “rat’s nest” effect. Don’t forget to smooth out the top!
  • Step 5 : Finish with a great hairspray. You can loosen your curls a bit more by running your fingers through it.

HAIRSTYLE FOR CURLY HAIR: DUTCH BRAID TUTORIAL

HAIRSTYLE FOR CURLY HAIR: DUTCH BRAID TUTORIAL

HAIRSTYLE FOR CURLY HAIR: DUTCH BRAID TUTORIAL

This hairstyle can be done in wet or dry hair, and looks great in second (or third!) day curls. It’s best for medium to long hair. If you have very long hair, it may be harder to twist around into the bun at the end. Try creating a larger bun, or leave your hair out in a side braid.

Step-by-Step

  1. Start by taking a section of hair at the front of your head. I usually take a section from my natural part across to the end of my left eyebrow. Split this section in to three equal sections.
  2. Begin a Dutch braid. This is the reverse of a French braid. Take the left section under the middle, and the right section under the left. Add in a small section of hair to the middle piece and bring that under the right section.
  3. Continue braiding down the back of your head, adding in small sections of hair as you go. Always bring the hair underneath so that your braid sits on top of your hair.
  4. Take a slight diagonal angle with your braid from the top left of your head to the bottom right. Once you reach the end of your hair, finish in a reverse braid and secure the end of your hair with a clear elastic.
  5. Stretch out your braid to emphasize the shape of your hair. Gently pull at the sides of the braid to loosen it. This will make your hair look thicker.
  6. Twist the end of your braid up and around to form a bun. Pin in place with bobby pins.

Voluminous, Lazy Day Pony

Even if you don’t have time to curl your hair beforehand, a voluminous ponytail may be in your future. The key is to tease your hair before gathering it. How? Pull small section up one at a time, spray hairspray on the underside and tease. LeSassafras shows you how in her video tutorial.

  1. Make a side part, then take a section of hair from the front left side of your part to your left temple.

  2. Split this into three and weave together to make a braid. Braid the right over the centre, then the left over the right and continue to braid that section.

  3. Stretch out the braid to make it look thicker. Secure the end with a pin or small elastic.

  4. Gather all your hair into a ponytail and secure with an elastic. Take the pin or elastic off the first braid, now it is tied in with the ponytail.
  5. Take a small piece of hair and wrap it around your hair elastic to cover it.
This is an easy way to dress up your ponytail that is quick enough to do every day, but pretty enough for an event.

French-Style Side Braid Tutorial

  • Step 1 : Start by separating a small section of hair from the bottom of the sweep of hair going across the back of your neck.
  • Step 2 : Split this section of hair into three sections and begin braiding as usual. Grab one of the outer sections and cross it over to the middle, then grab the outer section on the opposite side and pull it to the middle.
  • Step 3 : Continue braiding, add a section of loose hair from the hair sweeping over your other shoulder before you move it to the middle. By the time the (once-small) braid reaches the opposite side of your head, it should contain all your hair, not just the little section.
  • Step 4 : When you reach the opposite ear, braid the rest of your hair like a normal braid.
  • Step 5 : Secure the end of the braid with an elastic band, arrange any wisps of hair that are hanging out, and spray with hair spray if desired.
